Turner Contemporary visitors

I just got am e-mail from the Turner Centre with the visitor numbers for the first six weeks standing at 65.000 here is a copy of that email

At 10am on Saturday 16 April Turner Contemporary's gallery opened to the public.

It was a truly spectacular weekend...

  • Over 14,000 visitors came to see the gallery during the opening weekend
  • Over 2,000 cups of coffee were served at the gallery cafĂ©
  • Our Turner Contemporary mug was a bestseller with nearly all selling out
  • Over 2000 walked through the doors of the Visitor Information Centre next door at Droit House
Watch a film of the opening ceremony here and see photos from the weekend on our photo pool at www.flickr.com/groups/tcrevealed and www.flickr.com/groups/tcyouarehere. Share your memories of the opening celebrations by adding your photos to the group pools on Flickr.

In the first six weeks of opening, Turner Contemporary has welcomed over 65,000 visitors.

I am very pleased that people are coming to Margate to visit the Turner and Margate Old Town. People are saying Margate has a real buzz about it that I assume is down to the Turner opening. I hope now the council can keep the Dreamland project on course. I know we are in new financial times even from when these projects were first muted but with a new administration the easy option would be to abandon the regeneration, but politics is not about making easy decisions but having the strength to make the hard ones as well.
